"... Due to a great number of mineral springs of all kinds that are collected in one place Yevpatoriya is a rare resort where it is possible to undergo the combined treatment with curative mud, swimming in firths and in the sea, sand baths and grapes. In this happy combination of natural resources there is the great future of Yevpatoriya as a resort".

Though the aforesaid was written in the beginning of the XXth century, it does not make the importance of Yevpatoriya as a resort less in the beginning of the XXIst century, too. Many people come to Yevpatoriya as to a curative resort exactly. We would like to give you some advice for the period of your stay in our town...

The curative properties of the brine and mud of Moynak firth have no analogues in the world and substantially surpass the widely advertised since the biblical times analogues from the Dead Sea. By the way, summer in Yevpatoriya is much softer than in Israel, and this means that the rest and treatment here are much more comfortable. If we add that they are much cheaper, then we come to the idea that not only detergents and food for cats have to be advertised.

Of all the firths that surround Yevpatoriya the Moynak firth is the most important. Its water-surface area is 176 hectares, its length is 2 km, its biggest width is 890 metres, the average depth of the firth is 45 centimetres. The lakesides are covered with oleaster (olive-tree), they are gently sloping and convenient for swimming.

On the eastern shore of the firth there is a summer institution for mud-cures. Its history starts from the moment when Pavel Platonovich Pugach, a guard of the local salt-works, began to cure local inhabitants of rheumatism with muds. In 1886 Yevpatoriyan doctors S.I.Khodjash and S.P.Tsepenevskiy rented the firth for the term of 40 years and built the private "Institution for brine- and mud-cures" on its shore. This immediately brings Yevpatoriya the fame of the place that is the best one in the Crimea for medical tratment.

In 1904-1905, when exploring the medicinal silt of the Moynak firth, a famous Russian physicist A.P.Sokolov came to the conclusion that its medicinal properties are connected with the radioactivity. A year later D.I.Mendeleyev's disciple V.A.Gemilian confirmed this conclusion. In his poem dedicated to Yevpatoriya the famous Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovskiy said, "All the diseases will be squeezed out by Yevpatoriya hot muds".

A newspaper article in 1914 said, "… Yevpatoriya's bathing and beach occupy the first place not only in Russia, but all over Europe". Warm sand baths are healing for many diseases, and the most important thing about it is that these baths are a wonderful prophylactic remedy that allows to avoid these numerous diseases.

Before World War I in Yevpatoriya there were three sanatoriums - "Primorskiy", "Talassa" and "Helios", the Moynak institution for mud-cures, several clinics. At present people restore their health in 20 children's sanatoriums, 7 specialized sanatoriums for adults, 10 boarding houses and holiday homes.
